The next event NZNMA members are invited to attend is

A very interesting talk by Dr Jim Bartley. Jim is an ENT Specialist with an interest in nutritional medicine and research. He will be speaking on Vitamin D from his specialist perspective. He will look at Vitamin D adding further information and clinical insights to add to what we covered at the excellent talk done by Ric Coleman last year.

VITAMIN D - EMERGING ROLES IN INFECTION AND IMMUNITY

At the turn of the twentieth century tuberculosis of the skin was treated successfully with ultraviolet light. By the 1920s, pulmonary tuberculosis was being treated effectively with regular sun exposure. During the last decade, basic laboratory research into the antimicrobial actions of vitamin D has provided new insights into these historical observations. Vitamin D has a critical role in the innate immune system through the production of antimicrobial peptides, particularly cathelicidin. Vitamin D supplementation increases cathelicidin production. Vitamin D would appear to have an important role in respiratory tract, skin health and potentially gut health as well as in the prevention and treatment of a number of autoimmune diseases. However much of the current evidence relates to basic science research and epidemiological data. In many situations, appropriate double blind randomized controlled trial data to guide clinicians treating infectious and autoimmune disease is still lacking. Vitamin D has a long half-life and unless a loading dose is given, it can take a number of months before an optimal plateau level is reached. Many current vitamin D treatment and supplement recommendations will not allow optimal vitamin D levels to be achieved. Vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency is a global public health issue.

Be there at 6.30pm for dinner FERNZ restaurant in Birkenhead.

Talk starts at 7pm.

Welcome to all new members, guests welcome.

Please RSVP to Scott Cushman at PCNZ as usual.  The evening costs just $25, which pays for your dinner and to listen to this fantastic presentation.  Drinks extra.
